Greetings from the Kenya Migration

There is so much food during the migration for the carnivores that even the vultures don't want to eat.

Here I am in the Bush with a dead wildebeest.  You can see inside it.  Its leg looks like it has a sock on it.

Migration happens twice a year.  There is so much land full of wildebeest.  3 million of them travel thousands of miles across Tanzania to come to Kenya so they can graze.  In August and September the animals migrate to Tanzania and in February they come back to Kenya.  They go around in circles.

During the great migration, there’s so much drama.  When the wildebeest run -  the land shakes.  Especially when the animals cross the Maasai River.  It’s just dust and thunder.

The air is so thick with dirt that you smell and feel the dust while the thunder of the wildebeests’ hooves pound the ground as they stampede.  The earth under your feet shakes so hard that the vibration rises up through your whole body and takes hold of you.  It’s so powerful.

Greetings From Kenya Migration

We got back early from the migration because it started to rain.

Here I am with the Maasai.  We are having afternoon tea.

Greetings from Kenya Migration

Drama, drama every day.

I am still in the bush.  It is 7:30 in the evening.  We get the Internet here depending on the weather.

There are lots of stupid wildebeest running in circles; crossing the Masai River and trampling themselves to death.  Millions of them are here.  The weather is not so fantastic.  It rains a lot and provides a lot of drama between it and the wild.  But there is peace in the bush.

The airport burned down awhile ago.  The office is in tents.  Baggage is delivered by hand to the tents.  People, like animals, run inside the tents looking for their baggage when they arrive. There's never a dull moment here.

I arrived in Nairobi from San Francisco at 8:00 at night, their time.  By 12:45 in the morning, I got my baggage.  I did not go with the crazy masses looking for my baggage.  I saw an airport employee and gave him a description of my bag and a ten Dollar bill.  He found my luggage in just 5 minutes. (Money talks.)

I know it will be a challenge coming back to the States.  (More drama but I like drama -it's entertaining to me.)

Broken Peaces
I love this shot - the guy walking out of frame, all of the shadows, the woman who had just dropped her boom box that shattered into many broken pieces, the on-lookers, and the murals - especially the child holding the earth while skate boarding.  Drama.

Here is the moon:

I was so tired of chasing the moon that I saw this moon when I was going to the gym and I had my cameras in the trunk of my car, stopped, took this shot and went on to the gym.

Monday, June 24, 2013

I just got back from my adventures.

Last night I went to Treasure Island.  I got all my cameras ready for the moon. I went there early so I could get a good spot for shooting.

I was waiting for the moon to show up when 2 big buses of tourists came by and parked in front of me.  A big mob of people started coming from the buses with their Smart Phones and small cameras. I thought I was in a zoo. It was impossible to take pictures!  I packed my gear and left.

The saga continues….

I got up this morning to go on my moon chasing adventure again.  I left my house at 3:30 a.m. and was driving for 5 minutes when I spotted police on the road with flashlights.  I stopped and asked one of them what was happening.  The officer said that the electric wires were on the ground and that I had to turn around.

The officer was very nice and he helped me to turn around on this very  tiny street.  It was light because the moon was so big and bright. I was so happy to see the beautiful moon in the sky.

I got on the road again and started driving.  I was on my way to my moon destination and then I lost the moon!  The fog was rolling in and was so thick that I could hardly see where I was going but I continued because I wanted to see the other side.  2 hours later I arrived at my destination.

I couldn’t believe it.  Where I was, was worst than I could have imagined!  It was raining and foggy.  And all the moon chasers were there, too -  waiting for the fog to disappear.  All of their cameras were ready to photograph the moon and they were all covered with plastic so they would not get wet.

I waited for 15 minutes.  Then I left, drove back home and end of story. I have two eyes crossed with no sleep and both cameras without pictures of the moon.

I am going to take a nap and see when I wake up if I want to chase the moon again.  Life is funny and the weather is not on my side.

Today was a Photographers' meeting.  I showed my printed portfolio and every one loved it.

Tonight, I photograph the full moon on Treasure Island facing the Bay Bridge.  I hope to be home by midnight so I can get a few hours of sleep.

Tomorrow I will be up at 3 in the morning to drive about 80 miles to a lighthouse somewhere where I've never been before so I can chase the moon.  Full moon at sunrise!

I never thought I'd be chasing the moon for 2 days.  I think this is funny.

CITY OF LOVE
When I leave the city I love, I take a ‘peace’ of it with me.

Lucky you to be there and be able to walk in the rain at just the right time to capture the romance of the light and colors as well as the atmosphere. I like the static effect of the people on the one side and the movement of the cars on the other! Speaks to me of taking the time to "stop and smell the roses"!

SAD STORY OF GIRAFFE IN THE WILD

A mother giraffe gave birth to her baby when a leopard was in the area.  He attacked the baby giraffe but was chased away by a pack of hyenas.

The mother could not do anything to help.  She was standing and protecting her baby.  Her baby was dying in front of her and the hyenas had surrounded her, waiting in the bush, waiting for her baby to die. (Hyenas do not eat live animals.  They are scavengers.  They steal dead animals from lions, leopards, cheetahs, and so on.)

The baby giraffe, as you can see in the picture, still has the placenta attached to her.  I was taking these pictures and tears were rolling down my face.  This is life in the bush.

The next morning we drove into the bush and back to the mother and baby giraffe.

We got stuck in the mud going there.

You can see our safari car and the other emergency vehicle that came to pull us out of the mud.

By the time we got to the mother and baby,
the mother had left the area and the hyenas were eating the baby.

We had 2 days of continuous rain so the soil was very soft.  Every day was a real adventure getting wet, looking for animals to film.  If it wasn't the rains that detained us - it was the animals themselves that we wanted to photograph.

The next day, instead of the mud holding us up, we were held hostage by a herd of elephants for 3 hours. They blocked the road and we could not move.  We were surrounded. It felt like we were captured by them. One elephant came up to our car and tried to put his trunk under the hood to turn our car over…

As you know, I love danger.  It was very exciting.

I have best pictures of leopards!  This was my best trip for leopards.  It is once in a life time that you get so many good shots.

A very sad story of this baby giraffe…  She was just born and the leopard attacked - then he was chased by hyenas so he left the baby to die.  The hyenas waited until the baby died and then went and started to eat the baby.  That’s what happens in the wild.

I have so many stories to tell about my trip.   I am addicted to Africa.
Cheers,
Danuté
